Making sense of your car’s dashboard warning lights can be a little confusing, especially if more than one comes on at once. Fortunately, some lights are more common than others, effectively reducing the amount of lights you need to know. Here some common dashboard lights and their meanings from us here at Pollard Used Cars in Lubbock!
Battery/Charging Alert – Easily identified by the picture of a car battery, this dashboard light means there’s a problem with the vehicle’s charging system. The voltage level is below normal which calls for inspecting the battery terminals and alternator belt. The problem could lie with the battery itself. Inspect and replace it if necessary. If the problem persists, contact your local dealership service department.
Gas Cap – Everyone forgets to close their gas cap after filling up at the pump. Fortunately, the gas cap dashboard light if there to remind you to do so. If it isn’t tightened properly, the Check Engine light may also turn on. Simply tighten the gas cap. If the light doesn’t turn off, check to see if the cap is damaged in any way.
Lamp out – This dashboard light looks like a picture of the sun. It simply means that there’s an exterior light, like a headlamp, that isn’t working properly. Problems range from a burnt out bulb to an electrical problem. Replace any dead bulbs and contact the dealership if the problem persists.
Spring is arriving in full force which means now is the time to take care of any maintenance you put off! Winter can be harsh on a car, especially one parked outside, but spring is no lightweight. Take the time to properly prepare your car for rain and warmer weather. Here are a few useful spring maintenance tips from us here at Pollard Used Cars of Lubbock!
Wipers – Even warm climates face a little snow and rain over the course of winter. As a result, your windshield wipers likely saw a fair amount of use in the past season. Both a safety and convenience feature, windshield wipers should be replaced every six months. Inspect your wipers and replace them if necessary!
Oil – There are few fluids in a car that play a more important role than oil. Oil lubricates, protects, and cools the engine, making it a vital part of your daily driving routine. Cold weather tends to cause oil to thicken while warmer temperatures cause it to thin. As you can imagine, that isn’t good for its viscosity. Get an oil change to ensure your engine operates at peak performance.
Lights – Heavy rains mean using your headlights to ensure other drivers can see you from a distance. You could easily find yourself in trouble due to a lack of properly functioning headlights. Take the time to inspect your headlights and replace any burnt out bulbs!
Getting behind the wheel of a new car is always exciting but don’t let that get in the way of spotting potential problems. Knowing how to properly test drive a car is a pertinent part of determining if it’s right for you. We here at Pollard Used Cars know exactly how to test drive a car to expose any potential problems.
Size – Upon getting in the car, make sure you have plenty of room. Ensure there’s enough leg, head, and shoulder room for yourself as well as in the backseat. If you’re sitting too low or too high for your own comfort, it may be wise to consider finding a different vehicle. Keep your family’s needs in minds too. For example, a two-seater sports coupe probably isn’t going to work out well with a family of four.
Capability – Buying the vehicle you need should always take precedence over what you want. Drivers who work in construction will likely make better use of a truck than a compact sedan. If you’re constantly transporting animals, an SUV, minivan, or crossover will work better than a standard car as well.
Ride – Take the vehicle along different stretches of road at a variety of speeds to ensure the ride is comfortable. Too many bumps or the inability to climb a hill steadily could be turnoffs for many drivers.

Keeping a car up and running for years to come is easier in today’s world than ever before. Still, there are some things you can do to ensure your car lasts as long as possible. Here are 10 tips to make your used car last longer!
Maintain – The most obvious way to make your used car last longer is to properly maintain it. The oil and oil filter need changed on a regular basis but don’t forget about the other fluids and filters. Forgetting to change the brake fluid, for example, can lead to a totaled car.
Cool – The oil plays a role in keeping your car cool so be sure to attend to it regularly. The cooling system and coolant level should be maintained as well. If the engine gets too hot, it can literally melt.
Pressure – It can be easy to wave the tires off as something you can attend to later. Even so, make sure the tires are properly inflated. Doing so will increase the car’s fuel economy and offer improved handling and safety.
Warning – Keep an eye on the dashboard warning lights. Catching sight of a warning light or gauge is the easiest way to spot a problem.
Tune Up – Whether it’s a dealership or private mechanic, have your car checked up on every year or so to ensure it’s in proper working order.
Cover – Parking in a garage or under a cover will help preserve your car’s paint, ensuring it looks good on the road for years to come.
Clean – Regularly washing and waxing your car can help slow or completely stop cosmetic damage. Don’t forget the interior!
Drive – Having a lead foot is one way to drive while practicing good driving habits is another. The latter will reduce the amount of wear and tear and fuel used while on the road.
Schedule – Check your owner’s manual for the manufacturer-suggested maintenance schedule. Following it is your best bet to an odometer with six digits.
Inspect – Take a few minutes out of your day to walk around your car. Look for dings, dents, scratches, and other problems. Look closely at the tires and open the hood to see if you can spot any obvious problems.

K-9 Splash Fest is essentially a pool party for dogs and is sponsored by the City of Lubbock Parks and Recreation Department. As you’ve likely guessed, this year’s wet event takes place at Clapp Pool located in Lubbock on August 14th from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Owners and dogs alike can hop into the pool and swim a few laps – just make sure to keep a close eye on your canine! Dogs can compete in three different contests: Diving, Swim Suit Competition, and Retrieving, all of which are incredibly enjoyable to watch. Prizes are awarded in each event.
While dogs get in for free, owners must have proof of their canine’s vaccinations or tags and keep their pets on a leash. Dogs that are overly aggressive or in season will not be admitted to the K-9 Splash Fest event due to safety concerns.
